By: Kevin Wiyarnanda We got the chance to get up close and personal with the boys from ‘Before You Exit’ who recently came here to Singapore, headlining ‘The Color Run’ marathon at Sentosa Island. I was lucky enough to sit down with them for an interview session before they hit the stage to rock it all out! It all started with videos of them doing covers on YouTube that went viral and now they’re touring the world, playing shows almost every night. They are Connor (19), Riley (17) and Toby McDonough (15), the three brothers from Orlando, Florida, who are taking over the pop music scene with the release of their EP entitled ‘I Like That’ that is filled with super catchy power-pop songs (think ‘A Rocket to the Moon’). They may be in their teens, but the three brothers have performed in front of thousands across America, have more than 16 million hits on YouTube and went on tour with big names like All Time Low, Olly Murs and Cody Simpson. “We’re teenage guys so we write about teenage girls” says Riley followed by a laughter after I asked him about the inspiration behind their ‘I Like That’ EP. Connor adds that the inspiration also comes from their lives and what their friends and people around them are going through. “Each song kinda has its own meaning.” says Connor. They also mentioned that picking the songs to be featured in the EP was difficult because they had written 20 to 30 songs in total. “Its like the process of elimination, trying to decide which ones are our favorite.” says Toby. They also included their fans when picking the songs for the EP. “The funny part is that sometimes we’ll be like, ‘We love this song what do you think?’ and they’ll be like, ‘I actually like the other one better’ and we’ll be like, ‘Dang!’” Connor explains. Going on the road for tours surely means that they are away from home and their friends who are at school doing things that most teenagers their age do. Riley says that he has never gone to a school dance before. “I don’t know if it’s a fun experience, so I don’t know if I’m missing it or not.” However, Riley says that life on tour is amazing. “This is worth it, I’m playing shows every night.” Riley added. “I get to experience something that a lot of people don’t get to.” says Connor about leaving their hometown and going on tour. “All my friends at home are off going to college but I’m going on tour. It’s definitely something that I don’t wanna give up to go to college (for).” says Connor who is currently doing college online. The brothers have also considered to venture into the acting world as well, saying that ever since they were young they like to perform in plays.
