By: Alexandrea van Huizen Photos: Francesca van Huizen Manchester-based Indie-Rock band, The 1975, recently came down for their first ever concert here in Singapore. They performed at The Coliseum, Hard Rock Hotel on the 22nd of July to an intense audience consisting of mostly teenagers and young twenty-somethings. The band which is made-up of lead vocalist- Matthew Healy, guitarist- Adam Hann, bassist- Ross McDonald and drummer- George Daniel, kicked off the night with their popular upbeat tune, 'The City' off their self-titled debut album, which got the crowd moving and enthusiastically singing along to. They also kept the crowd entertained with their hit tracks like 'M.O.N.E.Y.' and 'Settle Down', amongst other songs. It was unbelievably humid during the concert and everyone was definitely perspiring. While introducing the band, Healy said, "We're very happy to be here, your country does terrible things to my hair." which in turn aroused some laughter from the crowd. Towards the end of their set, a few girls started fainting partly due to the immense heat from both the weather and the unventilated area where the crowd stood. Security guards were called in to escort them out of the venue to seek medical help. After the fainting incidences, Matty paused the set, requested that everyone take a step back and for water to be handed out into the crowd. One good thing to come out from all this was that for one lucky fan, Matty bent down and sang directly to her while she was being helped out of the area. Smoke machines and strobe lights were the key elements for the band's stage setting and it aptly adjusted with the different songs that were being played throughout the night. Known for their monochromatic image, the band were all adorning black and white garments as well as majority of their fans in the audience. Before 'Menswear' was performed, Matty very politely asked the crowd to put their smartphones and cameras away and just enjoy the music. He later requested everyone turn on their flashlights and what a beautiful sight it was- like little twinkling stars in the vast night sky. Hopefully it was equally as fun for the 1975 to perform here in Singapore as it was for the fans to watch and may we see them again soon.
