EMPIRE Tonight Alive, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and Anberlin took with them hearts of fans at the first installation of SHUT UP AT LISTEN held at The Coliseum, Singapore. It was a night of jumping, dancing, head-banging and tears! Playing on Singapore soil for the first time, Australian natives - TONIGHT ALIVE rocked the SUL stage with so much passion and enthusiasm. Channelling crowd favourites like 'Starlight' and 'Wasting Away', it was no surprise that the crowd danced and sang along. Lead vocalist Jenna McDougall teared it up with her flawless vocals and killer stage presence; reminding us why pop-punk needs more female vocalists! 'Amelia', a song dedicated to a late friend of Jenna's - left fans undoubting of the band's talent and ability to take their audience on an emotional journey. Tonight Alive is definitely a band you want to keep an eye out for! THE RED JUMPSUIT APPARATUS were next! Having played at our sunny shores before, Frontman Ronnie Winter knew what was installed for him. The crowd sang, head-banged and screamed as the band performed new and old songs alike. Newest member - Lead guitarist Josh Burke stole the spotlight with his killer guitar solos and flawless playing throughout the entire set! The Florida based band recently celebrated their 10th anniversary and have no intentions on slowing down. Alternative Rock band Anberlin were the last to hit the SUL'13 stage. Known for their killer live shows, Anberlin is another band that's been around for a decade. Singaporean fans were treated to a feast as the band recharged the crowd with a heart-pumping live show. By: Jerome Setho More than a decade and 6 albums later, the guys from Anberlin do not seem content on slowing down. As well as countless tours with so many different bands and in so many places it can definitely take its toll on some bands but not Anberlin that's for sure. After their appearances in Singapore for Baybeats in 2009, it definitely left their fans here in Singapore wanting more. Finally after 4 years of patiently waiting, fans here will get to see them perform once again! This time together with Australian pop punkers Tonight Alive and American alternative rockers The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. Since the last time they were here in Singapore, they have gone on to make 3 more albums. The latest one 'Vital' which has been described by the band as their most aggressive to date, certainly does live up to that billing. Like with most of the albums, Stephen's vocals is a stand out feature, Joseph Milligan and Christian McAlhaney playing some tremendous guitar parts. Not to mention drummer Nathan Young and Bassist Devon Rexcoat adding definition to the overall sound of the album with great drum riffs and bass lines which are to die for. Another element that they have added would be the more electronic effects and synthesizers which were were used in the right times and to right amounts. Lyrically wise it is also a huge step away from their previous works, plus it has the added bonus of Stephen's penchant for giving songs that honest and sincere feel to those lyrics as well. This album in a way just encapsulates Anberlin's journey through the years and as usual making great music along the way. Anberlin, when it comes to live performances are probably one of the most energetic bands around right now. It is like as if they treat every gig they have play as their first. The whole band seem to be so in sync and the whole sound just blends together so well. Stephan never seems to have an off day which is rare for many live performers these days. And with the energy the rest of the members bring be sure to be in for an awesome good time when they play here in Singapore on the 29th of August. Even in cyberspace these guys are making an impact with their music video for 'Unstable' reaching over half a million views. Their Twitter and Facebook hit a total combined more than 800,000 followers so with that big of a following you can see how much on an impact the have had on the world of alternative music. With an upcoming co-headlining tour with The Maine on the way as well, you can be sure that the guys at Anberlin will not be stopping anytime soon. Here's our exclusive interview with nate young from anberlinTell us more about Anberlin as a band? We're all really handsome. Normally, there's at least one dude in a band that's less attractive. But, not in our case. We're very blessed. How does your faith impact the music that you write? I cannot separate my faith from any aspect of me. It's apart of me as much as my ability to play music. It impacts everything, in every way. Without it I would be lost and the potentially the worst person you know. Which tour would you describe as your most memorable to date and why? Hmm. That's tough. We've been fortunate enough to have been on so many incredible tours. But, the one that sticks out in my memory the most was probably our first headlining tour on our album, Cities. It was the first time I remember thinking "oh, people like us" 'Unstable" has gotten over half a million views in YouTube, tell us more about this song? What is the story behind this? Nice! We actually wrote that song during Dark Is The Way, but felt it didn't come together in the way we wanted it to. So then while recording VITAL, it shaped up and we decided to make it an Itunes exclusive for that alum. I believe the lyrics are based on a personal experience of Stephen's, our singer. If you could play a set with any band, alive or passed on, who would they be and why? Foo Fighters. They're one of the best rock bands of our generation and have inspired us in so many ways. And finally, what is over the horizon for Anberlin? Right now just touring a ton! Then we head back to the states to go on a co-headlining tour with the Maine. Should be sweet!
