If I was to be completely honest, it’s been quite awhile since I last heard from Hoobastank. I vaguely remember attending their concert in 2007. Fast forward 7 years later, I was excited that I was going to see a band that meant so much to me as a young lad. With a bag of gig essentials, I was ready for what was to be a smashing rock show. Upon reaching the venue, I noticed the lines were surprisingly underwhelming for a concert of this magnitude. That did not mean that the crowd was not a rowdy bunch. Younger and older fans crowded to the front as the legends kicked off the set with their high energy hit "Just One" off their album "The Reason" - which has been their most successful one to date. The band continued to sweep their audience off their feet, hit after hit. Fans roared in anthemic unison as Hoobastank belted out their worldwide hit - THE REASON! I could feel my 17 year old self fist bumping to every verse. It was incredible. Hoobstank ended the night with Crawling in the Dark, which left fans at The Collesium in awe of the bands undeniable talent. The show proved that Hoobastank will be around for many more years to come

Favorite Soul/R&B Female Artist - Beyonce Favorite Soul/R&B Album - Beyoncé ('Beyoncé') Favorite Contemporary Inspirational Artist - Casting Crowns Favorite Electronic Dance Music Artist - Calvin Harris By: Jaaziel Job Australian natives Roswell are barely a year old but are already supporting major acts like The Wonder Years, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and Hawthorne Heights. Given their vast musical background, it is no surprise that each member of the Perth-born band has a lot to offer music lovers worldwide. Citing The Wonder Years, Set Your Goal and The Story So Far as their musical influences, Kat says their lyrics are entirely based on personal experiences. Lyrically, they are all personal experiences. That's usually my outlet. Musically, I think our favourite bands have set a certain standard for us in terms of song structure and making something musically satisfying. Kat delivers us a story with her singing - which is for the lack of a better word, flawless. A perfect blend of rasp, grunge and vocal range. Roswell delivers with charisma far better than many pop-punk bands today, with each member complimenting the next. It is with utmost confidence that I say this - Roswell is here for the longrun and I'm excited to see what the trio offers us next. Check out out full interview with Katt Nelson (Lead vocalist of Roswell) below. Tell us more about Roswell?
We started playing shows about a year ago - so we're still pretty new. We take a lot of influence from bands like The Wonder Years and Set Your Goals. You recently released your debut EP - "No One Lives Here Anymore", tell us more about this? The writing process for this release probably started well before the band even came together. I did a lot of writing while I was in between bands, I wanted to start something more like the bands I listened to, this EP was the result of that. What inspires your song writing? Lyrically, they are all personal experiences. That's usually my outlet. Musically, I think our favourite bands have set a certain standard for us in terms of song structure and making something musically satisfying. Your music video for “Bodies” is pretty amazing. What was the concept behind this? Originally the concept was to just find an abandoned house and make a video that was kind of dark in theme. I guess that was to follow the chorus "I know where the bodies are buried". We were on a budget so the idea of putting parts of a doll back together was more or less the result of not wanting to spend too much on props. Any big plans for Roswell in terms of touring and new music? There have definitely been a few new songs we've been throwing around. I think they'll end up on whatever we release next. We definitely want to make it to other parts of Australia in 2015. So far we haven't left our city. There are so many bands and people sharing their music over the internet – what makes Roswell different from the rest? I think we try to make ourselves as accessible to our fans as possible. We like to try and thank everyone individually who has supported us in any way. I think that's a simple yet often neglected quality in local (Australian) bands today.
Photos: Chris Sim exclusively for LTL Great music, great choreography and great fun- Mamma Mia is a musical like no other and it has come to Singapore. It follows a young girl, Sophie, on the weekend of her wedding, as she tries to discover the identity of her father. Having read her mother's diary, she decides there are three possibilities- Sam, Bill and Harry. When they all show up for the wedding (unbeknownst to Donna, Sophie’s mother) chaos and hilarity ensues. The story of family, friendship and love is one that will leave you inspired and excited. It is impossible to leave a Mamma Mia theatre without a smile on your face. I’ve been doing it for three years now, and I absolutely love it. The cast were full of energy and excitement last week as they premiered the show to a buzzing crowd at Marina Bay Sands and we had the chance to talk to some of them- Niamh Perry (Sophie), Sara Poyzer (Donna), Richard Standing (Sam), Sue Devaney (Rosie) and Geraldine Fitzgerald (Tanya). You’ve all been in the musical for quite a while, how do you keep it fresh? Do you ever get bored? Sara Poyzer (Donna) : I try and do it like it’s the first time every night. Richard Standing (Sam) : I was scared that I would tire of it, but I don’t. It’s not cheap, so you feel a certain responsibility to the audience- I want to give them a good show. There’s a great story about a violinist, he was 90 years old and he said, “I still practice every day” when people asked him why he said, “well I think I might be getting somewhere” and that’s all it is really, mental attitude. Niamh Perry (Sophie) : I just don’t think you can ever get bored of it. If someone’s had a really good day, for example, they bring that energy on stage. If someone's had a bad day, you all work to bring them back up. We're all a big family. Are you enjoying Singapore so far? Niamh: I’m so excited, once the show's up and running and we’re rearing to go we can explore a little bit more, but so far I love it. Richard: The people are great- the taxi drivers are hilarious! This one guy told jokes non-stop for about a 25-minute journey. Niamh: One taxi driver told me I was going to get fat here! From all the rice! What’s your dream role? Sue Devaney (Rosie): I'd love to play Puck in a Midsummer Nights Dream, but I think I'm probably a bit old now. Geraldine Fitzgerald (Tanya): I’d like to do Queen Elizabeth in Richard the third. What advice would you give to people who want to pursue acting as a career? Sue: Just believe. Just believe and never doubt yourself! If it’s something that you've always wanted to do, you'll always find a way. If I’m not working, I'll get myself a little singing group together, and perform in wine bars. Geraldine: Find good teachers… and have another job up your sleeve- it will stand you in good stead! Sara: Always be yourself, always be nice to people and work hard. I wrote to a company for five years before I got a job because I wanted to work with him that badly and ever since then I’ve worked with him for years. I think that talent is really important but your attitude is more important. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. It’s a tough industry but it’s the best! Audiences of all ages are guaranteed to enjoy Mamma Mia. The stellar cast bring the story to life with their limitless energy and passion, and it is impossible not to leave the theatre with a smile on your face and the music of ABBA running through your mind.

We're very excited for this! For the best experience, please watch this video in HD. By: Jaaziel Job We recently interviewed Cooper, Trenton and Joel from the Australian alternative-rock band Hands Like Houses. What amazing and down to earth lads! By: Alexandrea van Huizen English-Irish band, One Direction have just released their fourth studio album, aptly named- 'FOUR'. The inter-webs were abuzz when the band decided to tease their new album by releasing the track 'Fireproof' for free download on their official website back in September of this year. In a video message, the guys thanked their fans for standing by and supporting them since the very beginning and also talked about how releasing 'Fireproof' for free was their own way of showing their gratitude. It is undeniable from this album that One Direction have evolved musically and have really found their sound as a band. Moving on from their cookie-cutter boyband image during their debut back in 2011, it is clear now that the boys of One Direction have really grown into men. The songs in this album are more mature and more from the heart. The band have cited personal experiences as their number one motivation when writing the songs. As with most albums, 'FOUR' features a range of tracks from happy dance hits to a few slightly more toned-down ones. 18 It comes as no surprise that Ed Sheeran, who is one of the biggest selling artistes out there and also a close friend to the band, lent a hand in writing this beautiful ballad. There's just something about the soft guitar strums, the lyrics and the way the guys sing with such true emotion that will keep you hooked. Where Do Broken Hearts Go When asked during an interview what their favourite songs off 'FOUR' were, Niall and Zayn both agreed that this track was definitely it. The track has a very nostalgic vibe to it. This song was co-written by band member, Harry Styles with the help of a few other songwriters including Teddy Geiger who is also one of the co-producers of the album. Illusion Illusion A slightly more up-tempo song, this bonus track has a beautiful backstory to it. Liam Payne was having a casual conversation with another writer, Julian Bunetta, about their girlfriends when Julian had the great idea of writing a song based on the stuff Liam was telling him about his girlfriend, Sophia Smith. Fellow band member, Niall Horan, also had a part to play in writing this song while Liam contributed the melody. Fool's Gold One of the few rare tracks where all five members wrote the song together. This song will tuck at everyone's heartstrings only for the simple fact that no matter who you are, you will definitely relate to it. In this one, they sing about unrequited love and not letting go even though it's hopeless to keep hanging on. Night Changes Another one of the rare songs that all the guys wrote together, 'Night Changes' will be the second single off the album. They have already filmed the music video for it and it is set to be released in a few days' time- on the 21st of this month. Interestingly enough, the band filmed the entire music video separately, which is a first for them. It is also Harry Styles' favourite track off the album. In the music video, each of the guys will show you what it's like to go on a date with them. Sounds interesting! While you patiently wait for the music video to arrive, watch this clip of them singing an acoustic version of 'Night Changes'. One Direction has done it once again with 'FOUR', all the tracks are so unique and well executed. It is extremely evident from this album that this band are breaking barriers everywhere by exceeding all the expectations. The band have said that this is probably their best album to date and we can't agree more with them. Don't write these guys off just yet, they will be here for the long-haul. One Direction will begin their next worldwide tour called 'On the Road Again' soon, where one of the shows will be held right here in Singapore on March 11 2015. Download 'FOUR' from the iTunes store or grab your physical copy off the shelves in any music store near you.
19th of October 2014: Singapore band The Caulfield Cult embarked on a journey of epic proportions in North America. This is a personal tour diary written by Nick of The Caulfield Cult.
Written by Nick of The Caulfield Cult for Luvthelife. Week One. 19th October, left home at midnight and 30 hours later, I'm in New York. The uncertainty of customs giving us a hard time, or worse, getting sent back (as warned by the delta security personnel) made the long flight a waiting room hell. nevertheless, we arrived safe. 22nd October was the date of our first show in America, in Long Island, New York. I hired a driver and reserved a van from a company at the airport. However, after multiple trips and over 150 USD worth of taxi rides trying to sort things out, we were told we definitely couldn't rent anything bigger than a standard sized car, due to no one being 25 or above. We decided to save the money and tour in our driver, Jeff's tiny sedan car. We have with us 2 guitars, a huge bass, 2 pedal cases, a huge box of merch, 2 backpacks, 2 sets of luggage, a massive bag of cymbals and a snare drum. Skinny and Syahadi abandoned their luggage and brought a smaller bag while I abandoned my backpack and brought with me 2 tshirts, a towel and a toothbrush. Brian abandoned his bass case.we barely managed to stuff everything in the car with bags and pedal cases and with the bass guitar in between our legs and on our laps, we were all ready for the 3 week long tour. 25th October, 4th show on tour. We played a basement in Philadelphia. Two songs in, cops showed up because neighbours were complaining about the noise so we played the rest of our set to a very kind and receptive crowd in a tiny basement with the roof just four inches or so above our heads. I like America already. Week Two 27th October, three days to Gainesville, Florida and four days to The Fest. All 8 shows that led down to The Fest were great, nothing crazy, but enough people came. We got paid a little more then we expected we would. None of us have been to America. None of us expected this amazing hospitality. 30th October was our longest drive yet. 7 and a half hours in the car. Can't feel most of my legs after but we're here. Three of our best friends from Singapore came to hang out with us and watch us play at fest. We booked two rooms in a hotel. As much as i love my band, after spending sharing personal spaces for the last 280 something hours, i was excited to see other familiar faces. As much as i appreciate strangers letting us crash on their living room or kitchen floors every time we're on tour, I was excited to sleep on a bed for the next four days. 31st October, day one of The Fest. The streets of Gainesville were filled and packed with punks and kids from all over the world. We printed hundreds of flyers detailing where and when we were playing. Throughout the weekend, I've been handing these out to people in Gainesville and talking to each and every one of them. The hands-on work ethic of pre internet age punk and hardcore has a huge appeal to me. A conversation, a piece of paper and a smile mean so much more than a Facebook invite to an event. 2nd November, 3rd and last day of fest. We're on at 6.20pm. We're on the same time as 7 Seconds, United Nations and Gnarwolves. All of which are much bigger bands, playing much bigger stages. My fears of playing to no one and the embarrassment that'll follow amplified an hour before we played. People back home are proud of us for this. I DO NOT want to disappoint. We're on stage. There are about 20 people in front me. I chug the remainder of my drink, made a few jokes, and started playing. Two songs in, I look up and the place is filled with people. Cheers got louder and longer. We ended the set with smiles on our faces. People from all over the world came to the stage immediately after we're done to shake our hands and pass their compliments. I look over to our merch table and a comforting size of crowd gathers. Fifteen minutes later, Jeff (who also handles our merch) told me our records have sold out. We also watched Strike Anywhere, A Wilhelm Scream, Hot Water Music, Self Defense Family, Lifetime and Less than Jake among other dozens of great bands we grew up listening to. It has been a great weekend. Nick Vocals Guitar Skinny Guitars Brian Bass / Backing Vocals Syahadi – Drums |
