By: Kevin Wiyarnanda picture: one republic. OneRepublic has been one of the most successful pop rock bands in the last few years and with the release of their latest album, Native, there is no slowing down for the Oklahoma-origin band.
Following up the release of Waking Up in 2009, Native is filled with radio-friendly songs with catchy-hooks, and yet excellent songwriting; something that is missing in mainstream music nowadays."If I Lose Myself", is an excellent pick as the record's lead single with addictive guitar riffs in the chorus and beats that make you wanna dance. Described as a song about Ryan Tedder's fear of flying, the bridge part of the song could be an amazing stadium-sing-along session when performed live, something that I really look forward to if they perform here. One of the standout tracks of the record is "Burning Bridges" where Ryan Tedder's impeccable vocal could be heard soaring in the song's chorus. "Something I Need" is another track to look out for. Tedder described the song as a pub song where everyone in a pub could just sing along to the song. One line that really caught my attention is the song's chorus "In this world full of people there's one killing me and if we only die once, I wanna die with you" which represents how we all have that one person we want to spend the rest of our lives with according to Tedder. The additional choir in the song chorus gives the song its own kick. A track called "Light It Up" is a track that the band feels "cool" for having it in the album because it's not a conventional pop-rock song that they usually have. The instruments stand out more than the vocal which shows a different side of the band. A violin-filled track called "Au Revoir" is one of the slow tracks on the album that gives a very soothing and peaceful atmosphere compared to the other tracks. "Life in Color" serves as a great up-tempo closing song for Native that i think is a potential next single for the album. Native is a pure gold pop-rock album that stands out from today's mainstream music that is filled with less-engaging lyrics and focuses only on repetitive hooks. However, Native proves that having addictive hooks can also come with excellent songwriting and arrangement that gives the band it's signature touch for each of the song in Native. OneRepublic's new album is worth the every penny. A stellar album that shows an amazing growth the band has gone through. Pretty sure they're going to amaze us for years to come.
