By: Megan Williams Ed Sheeran has, from the very start of his career, shown an impressive capacity to go against the grain and still experience great successes. His debut album ‘+’ is a exemplary of the fact that, even in an era where the charts are dominated by electronic beats, someone with a completely different approach to music can shine through. With his second studio album ‘x’ (or ‘Multiply’), Sheeran has verified himself as an unbelievably talented artist. Ed has been the first to admit that, for anyone, the second album has always got a ‘make-or-break’ stigma attached to it. There have been countless artists, whose second albums have fallen dramatically short of their debuts, leaving them to, unfortunately, fall by the wayside. The pressure was on for Sheeran, who, after the success of ‘+’, had all eyes on him to produce another chart topping album. Ed made a daring move by releasing ‘Sing’ as the first single, in the sense that it was completely different to what his fans were used to hearing from him. The song served the purpose of showing everyone the incredible variety Ed Sheeran is capable of, and in turn intensified the hype surrounding the album. ‘Sing’ introduced the fans to a whole new side of Sheeran, and suddenly opened the singer up to an even wider audience. Since its release, ‘Sing’ has become one of this summers anthems, as well as Sheerans first single to reach Number 1 in the UK. Photo: Dan Winton. One impressive characteristic demonstrated on the album, out of many, is Sheerans songwriting cabilities. It has almost become a rarity to come across an artist who writes his or her own material, or shows particular flair in the music writing field- which makes the raw talent possessed by Ed Sheeran all the more exciting. Regardless of which song you choose to listen to on the album, you will be duly captivated by the lyrics. Somehow, Sheeran manages to continually come out with music that is poetic, beautiful and instantly relatable. The musical variety demonstrated on this album really is a credit to Ed Sheeran. He effortlessly shifts between the hip-hop vibes of songs such as ‘Sing’ and ‘Don’t’, to the softer, more melodic tones like those you hear in ‘One’. There is a song on this album for everyone, and the fact that Sheeran can provide this diversity is a skill that will help him to leave indelible marks on the music industry, and on pop culture.

By: Alexandrea van Huizen After what seems like forever (about 7 years), former Disney star Hilary Duff is making a comeback and we're only all too happy about that. After releasing her latest single earlier this week entitled 'Chasing the Sun', the response has been overwhelming. The official music video has garnered over 10 million views on YouTube. The light-hearted video shows Hilary coming in late to her very mundane office job and then her just daydreaming about how she'd much rather be spending her time at the beach. I reckon the video is pretty much everything you'd expect from Hilary at this stage in her life. The message behind it is also very strong. She sings about how in life, it is so important to do only the things that you want to do instead of wasting your time. When you really think about it, it's makes perfect sense. We've only got one life to live so we should live it well. It is so nice to have Hilary back, doing something she absolutely loves. Her fifth studio album will drop later this year and I'm sure fans everywhere are anxiously anticipating it. Check out her official Instagram for cute little updates about the upcoming album. Be sure to be the first to grab a copy once it hits stores!
By: Kevin Wiyarnanda British singer, Sam Smith has been widely known from Disclosure’s hit track ‘Latch’ that features his soaring vocal throughout the entire song. With such an amazing set of pipes like his, it was just a matter of time for him to release his own full length album. Smith’s debut album entitled ‘In the Lonely Hour’ is a record with a universal theme that I’m sure everyone can relate to- unrequited love. Described as an album written ‘for lonely people’ by Smith himself, the inspiration for the album came from the singer’s own painful love life. Smith allows his listeners to enter the deepest parts of his life with heartfelt lyrics that are brilliantly written and catchy melodies without being overly corny. The song, ‘Leave Your Lover’ has a more subtle approach with a very soothing guitar opening that is then perfectly layered with some strings and piano over Smith’s impeccable ability to slide from his chest voice to his head voice effortlessly. As the record progresses, the middle part features less melancholic and more upbeat songs that talk about Smith’s realization of loving someone who’s not worth his time. In ‘Like I Can’, Smith sings to his former love interest saying that there will be no one who would give as much love as Smith. The song has the empowerment feel to it that shouts ‘It’s your loss!’ loudly. Just when you thought Smith was done singing about his failed attempts with love, he takes you back once again to an even deeper part of his pain, with more tear-jerking tunes like ‘Not In That Way’ that just cuts right through the heart. The song is the true representation of unrequited love. Every single line in the song is just spot on. Flashbacks of those memories from the last unrequited love you had will definitely come back to your head because of the extremely hurtful atmosphere created by the simple guitar plucking throughout the song with Smith’s raw vocal talent. Following that track, the album version of ‘Lay Me Down’ sounds more stripped down and more appropriate compared to the previously released version, which was more up-tempo and sounded rather rushed. The song showcases a lot of Smith’s vocal ability with perfectly executed melismas in the chorus and solid belts throughout the song. The deluxe version of the album features an upbeat track called ‘Restart’ that will make you want to dance to the beat of the song about how Smith is so over with his previous love story, a perfect fit to wrap up the singer’s melancholic life chapter. Smith’s previous collaborations were also added to the deluxe version of the album, however, the definite standout has to be his acoustic rendition of the smash hit ‘Latch’ which sounds way more intimate and heartfelt than the original version with Disclosure. 'In the Lonely Hour' is the epitome of unrequited love, heart-wrenching, brilliantly written and perfectly-produced. A stellar debut album to kick-off Smith’s career in the industry that sets him apart from other male vocalists in the music scene with his distinguishable soulful voice. The solid release gives Smith a great ‘first impression’ to music lovers alike, proving that there is indeed someone who can bring class while singing the blues about the very much relatable topic that is unrequited love. By: Alexandrea van Huizen Contrary to the title, this hollywood star needs no introduction. Lucy Hale, best known for her role as Aria Montgomery on ABC Family's hit show, 'Pretty Little Liars' has just released her debut album entitled 'Road Between' and it is amazing! The two tracks that stand out most from the album are, hit single 'You Sound Good To Me' and 'Nervous Girls'. YOU SOUND GOOD TO ME 'You Sound Good To Me' is an extremely upbeat song in which Lucy sings about the simplicity of being in love. A beautiful melody accompanied by equally beautifully written lyrics, it is no surprise that the single managed to attain the second top spot on the iTunes Country chart. As of right now, the music video has garnered over 7 million views on YouTube and I'm certain that every single of one them will agree with me when I say, this songs really does sound good to me. NERVOUS GIRLS Unlike her previous single, this ballad is slightly more close to her heart. In this stripped-down acoustic version, the starlet sings about the challenges she faces- be it nursing a broken heart, feeling good about herself or simply just finding her way in life. 'Nervous Girls' is an extremely captivating track which I'm sure almost every girl can relate to, some way or another. Although Lucy's music journey has only just begun, it is evident from this album that she has the potential to go very far in this industry. Be sure to grab your copy of 'Road Between' now, digitally and physically in stores near you!
By: Jaaziel Job "Even when I think about it now, it still feels like a dream. They were singing along to every one of my songs as loud as they could. I couldn't believe it. I am so thankful for moments like that." Photo: Melly Lee Photography AJ RAFAEL ventured into the world of internet stardom 10 years ago. Now, the YouTube pioneer is considered to be one of the most talented and respected acts within the industry. Boasting a following of over 300, 000 fans on Facebook and more than half a million subscribers on YouTube, The 25 year old singer/songwriter has come a long way since his internet debut. With his success, it is no surprise that fans across the globe were flabbergasted with the news of his indefinite hiatus from music. (read his letter) AJ RAFAEL SPEAKS TO LUVTHELIFE IN THIS EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: How did YouTube happen? I posted my first video in September 2006. It was a piano medley of songs from my favorite band at the time, Meg & Dia. After that, I started posting more covers and original music. I didn't even realize I was gaining "subscribers" at the time, it was all really for MySpace. You've toured many cities and countries - Tell us more about your most memorable show? I just came from the Philippines, so that show is the highlight in recent memory. It was a random Tuesday, the venue was packed and it was loud! I kept thinking that it was a dream. Even when I think about it now, it still feels like a dream. They were singing along to every one of my songs as loud as they could. I couldn't believe it. I am so thankful for moments like that. Who are your musical influences and why? Boyz II Men and Michael Jackson were my singing influences growing up. When I reached high school, I started listening to a lot of pop punk and rock. My sound has influences of both R&B and rock. I'm glad to have been raised on American standards. I have a lot of music that sounds completely different. I think that it is important to have a large music library. You get something fresh every time. Where and how do you get inspiration for songwriting? I get inspired by real life situations, as they happen to me, in real time. Say...I went through some drama or whatever one night, when I get home I immediately get on the piano and express what I'm feeling through music. It's both a blessing and a curse that inspiration just comes out of nowhere sometimes. Sometimes you finish, and most of the time you don't finish a song. It depends where you're at physically. I've written a song in the car while I was driving- that song is the title song to my album, "Red Roses". Any secret hobbies and talents that are not music related? Hmm... I play a lot of video games! I've always loved gaming. I wasn't exactly good at it growing up, but I enjoy it till this day. Also, I want to learn to be good at basketball. I joined a summer league with my friends this year... I hope I can get some minutes. Haha! My secret talent? DDR! When I was younger, I competed in 'tourneys' and stuff. Random. With all the attention and fame, how do you keep yourself grounded? Well, I don't get recognized as much as you guys probably think... But when I do, it's either at a show or at Disneyland (haha). I just know that I have to appreciate every single moment I have when a fan approaches me because I know it won't last forever. The fact that I'm important enough in their life to tell me that I'm their inspiration, or that I helped them get through some stuff is irreplaceable. I have my mom to thank for not letting everything get to my head so easily. She always told me that there's a reason why people love me, and it's my songwriting and hard work. I'll always remember that. It's not my face and charm (haha) but it's the things I create. So I will continue to work hard to share that with people. You're taking an indefinite hiatus from playing music professionally, tell us a little bit more on why you've decided to do so? Well, if you've read the letter that's pretty much why. Not much more I can say about it except that I felt like it was the right time to take a break. I've been playing music nonstop and "chasing the dream" for 10 years now... It's hard to actually say to yourself, "hey, I think I deserve a break". So once I was comfortable in saying that, I announced it to my fans. The support has been tremendous and I think a lot of 'creatives' think that they can't take a break. I say that you should and can. It doesn't have to be a long one, just take some time to find your passion for your art again. Lastly, a message to all the AJ fans reading this? Thanks for your support after all these years, and to the new fans, I hope you guys can make it to a show whenever I get back to the scene. Just need some time for myself, that's all. You guys rock! By: Alexandrea van Huizen Photos: Francesca van Huizen Manchester-based Indie-Rock band, The 1975, recently came down for their first ever concert here in Singapore. They performed at The Coliseum, Hard Rock Hotel on the 22nd of July to an intense audience consisting of mostly teenagers and young twenty-somethings. The band which is made-up of lead vocalist- Matthew Healy, guitarist- Adam Hann, bassist- Ross McDonald and drummer- George Daniel, kicked off the night with their popular upbeat tune, 'The City' off their self-titled debut album, which got the crowd moving and enthusiastically singing along to. They also kept the crowd entertained with their hit tracks like 'M.O.N.E.Y.' and 'Settle Down', amongst other songs. It was unbelievably humid during the concert and everyone was definitely perspiring. While introducing the band, Healy said, "We're very happy to be here, your country does terrible things to my hair." which in turn aroused some laughter from the crowd. Towards the end of their set, a few girls started fainting partly due to the immense heat from both the weather and the unventilated area where the crowd stood. Security guards were called in to escort them out of the venue to seek medical help. After the fainting incidences, Matty paused the set, requested that everyone take a step back and for water to be handed out into the crowd. One good thing to come out from all this was that for one lucky fan, Matty bent down and sang directly to her while she was being helped out of the area. Smoke machines and strobe lights were the key elements for the band's stage setting and it aptly adjusted with the different songs that were being played throughout the night. Known for their monochromatic image, the band were all adorning black and white garments as well as majority of their fans in the audience. Before 'Menswear' was performed, Matty very politely asked the crowd to put their smartphones and cameras away and just enjoy the music. He later requested everyone turn on their flashlights and what a beautiful sight it was- like little twinkling stars in the vast night sky. Hopefully it was equally as fun for the 1975 to perform here in Singapore as it was for the fans to watch and may we see them again soon.
