Giant robots? Check. Aliens in a form of a huge grotesque monster? Check. The world is ending and the only person who can save it is as a smoking hot guy with a nice six pack? Check. Pacific Rim (Directed by Guillermo del Toro and Written by del Toro/Travis Beacham) does have all the premises to be the blockbuster of the year. I was curious to see whether the movie would live up to it’s hype. Verdict? It did not disappoint. In all honesty, I did not expect too much from the movie. Yeah..sure, You’ll get the usual. Cool CGI, explosions here there, bad guy dies and the good guys win, the world is saved and all that jazz; pretty much like every other action movie out there! But the movie delivered so much more. The movie starts with the gigantic aliens- or Kaiju (as they call it) emerging from the depths of the Pacific ocean! You know, they look like your worst seafood nightmare! In order to fight the aliens, humanity with all its glory, put aside their differences and create a kickass weapon in the form of massive robots called Jäger (that means hunter in German); controlled by two human pilots that have had their brains bounded with the robots. Think ‘War of the Worlds’ meet ‘Cloverfield’ meet ‘Transformers’. For a while, the Jägers managed to keep the Kaijus and their fishy asses away! Eventually, however, The Kaijus evolve to better match the Jägers, causing the World Government to render the humanoid robots obsolete. For one, it actually has a pretty decent storyline- quite honestly watching a lot of action movies these days I often turn off my brain and just enjoy the show. All the shootings, the bombings and the explosions! I am usually uninterested in the plot and forget about the characters and their emotions. After all if your main target audience are the TWEENS, I think the “OMG-let’s-combine-cool-cars-aliens-giant-robots-with-a-smoking-hot-babe-that-does-not-actually-contribute-to-the-storyline” strategy works, I'm cool! (yes Transformers, I’m looking at you). Pacific Rim though, kept me hanging on to the edge of my seat for that whole 132 minutes; sitting open-mouthed and completely neglecting my salted popcorn! I like how the show explores the emotional depths of the characters. It is actually a clever way to insert flashbacks and set an emotional tone. Granted it’s no ‘Hachiko’, but from a movie with the tagline of ‘Go Big or Go Extinct,’ it’s a stellar achievement. I especially love how del Toro does not opt for a sexy smoldering heroine that jumps on the male lead every chance she gets. Instead we have this quirky, doll-like, kick ass Japanese girl doing the tricks! Despite the lack of intimacy between the protagonist, (not even a single kiss, I took note of it!) they have a connection and they deeply care for each other. Yes, it’s predictable. You won’t get any ‘Shutter Island’ mindfuckery, or twist-and-turns of the plot, or witty deep philosophical quotes that you would post as a Facebook status. After all, it’s a movie about giant robots fighting giant aliens! For the genre, it actually puts some consideration to the characters and the storyline; which similar movies seem to unfortunately lack! LTL strongly urges you to watch Pacific Rim (although judging by how it is, the chances are one of your friends have already ask you to go). Its fan-freaking-tastic.
